2027 Election: Seriake Dickson talks about court ruling against NDC

Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) leader, Seriake Dickson, has rejected the Federal High Court ruling ordering the deregistration of the party, describing the ruling as illegal and insisting that it would be quashed through the legal process.

Dickson made this statement while reacting to Friday’s ruling by Justice Isah Dashen of the Federal High Court in Lokoja, which ordered the cancellation of the NDC.

He argued that the court’s decision lacked legal force and was intended to undermine the party’s credibility, growth and achievements.

Dickson rejects the court’s ruling

According to Dickson, the ruling represents a direct attack on Nigeria’s democratic system and poses a serious threat to the country’s multi-party democracy.

He argued that the ruling was designed to limit political competition and reduce the democratic space available to Nigerians.

“All I can say is that the order has no legal force and is intended to affect the fundamental credibility and efforts of our party. The order is illegal and will not be valid.

“It is against multi-party democracy, it is anti-democratic in nature and aims to narrow and stifle democratic space. It will meet resistance from all of us and all lovers of democracy in Nigeria,” Dickson said.

The former governor revealed that the NDC had already assembled a team of lawyers to challenge the ruling and immediately initiate legal proceedings to quash the court order.

He urged party members, supporters and candidates across the country to remain calm, continue their political activities and avoid actions that could disrupt the party’s programs.

Questions about legal action

Dickson also questioned the standing of the appellant in the case, identified as the Peace Movement Party.

He argued that the association was neither a registered political party nor among the groups that applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for registration in 2025.

According to him, the group had no legal interest in the matter and should not have been recognized as a party to the lawsuit.

He insisted that the circumstances of the case raised serious legal questions that would be addressed during the appeal process.

There are political forces behind the cause

Dickson further claimed that people upset by the rapid rise of the NDC were responsible for initiating the legal action against the party.

He said the party’s growth in just five months had attracted political opposition from those who felt threatened by its growing popularity.

Despite the court ruling, Dickson expressed confidence that the NDC will overcome the legal challenge and continue preparations for future elections.

He maintained that the ruling would neither derail the party’s activities nor weaken its resolve to provide an alternative political platform to Nigerians.

The party promises to move forward

The NDC leader reaffirmed the party’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s multi-party democracy, promising that all available judicial remedies would be explored to overturn what he described as a miscarriage of justice.

He added that the party remained focused on its goals and will continue to engage supporters nationwide as the legal process takes its course.
