Shehu Sani asks Fayose to retract comments about northern region and apologise

Former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central senatorial district in the National Assembly, Senator Shehu Sani has called on former Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose to issue an apology to Northerners following his (Fayose’s) comments on residents of the region.

Fayose had stirred up a storm when he said the federal government’s failure to develop Nigeria was because northerners were marrying many wives and having many children indiscriminately, creating major problems for Nigeria and becoming a burden on the government.

“The reason why it is difficult for Tinubu to develop Nigeria is because the Northerners are giving birth to children they cannot care for,” Fayose said in an interview on Channels Television’s programme on Monday night.

He noted that the population explosion in the North was the reason President Bola Tinubu had not been able to develop this country.

As many Nigerians continued to mock the former Ekiti governor over his comments, Sani also reacted by urging Fayose to apologise to the region given his status as an elder statesman.

In a post on his X account on Tuesday, the former lawmaker said:

“Although Fayose was speaking as an individual, his reported remarks about Northerners were insulting and absurd.

“I suggest that he humbly withdraw it and apologize as a statesman,” said Sani.
