The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara State has condemned the attempt by some protesters to attack the residence of the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, in Gusau.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Gusau by the stateβs Public Relations Secretary, Yusuf Idris, the party regretted that hoodlums were positioned to destroy properties belonging to its members during the ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests in the state.
The statement read: βWe observed that many hoodlums were strategically deployed to attack and destroy the personalities and properties of APC members.
βIt is unfortunate that on the first day of the protest, the protesters tried to attack the private residence of former Governor Bello Matawalle.β
The party recalled that Matawalle’s residence was broken into by some hoodlums in 2023 and urged security agencies to prevent a repeat of the incident.
βFortunately, the quick action of the security forces to prevent the protesters from destroying the minister’s house meant that the situation could be saved.
βWe commend the security agencies in the state for being proactive.
βThe political thugs, most likely carrying out the directives of their leaders, will destroy the minister’s house and property.
βThey also attacked Senator Sahabi Yauβs residence in his hometown of Kaura Namoda, where they destroyed many valuables and vandalized his Toyota Hilux van in the name of peaceful protest.
βWe had previously predicted the possibility of the protests being hijacked by rioters and other criminals in the states they manifest.
βWe wish to appeal to the security agencies in the state to provide the desired protection to the lives and property of our members and all well-meaning citizens.
βWe appeal to the youth not to allow themselves to be exploited by irresponsible politicians, especially since the protests across the country should be peaceful and voice the various problems in the country.
βProtests, which are a constitutional right of Nigerian citizens, must be peaceful and without threat to life and property,β the statement added.
