Boniface: “Bayer Leverkusen are under no pressure to repeat last season’s success”

Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface has said he and his Bayer Leverkusen teammates are under no pressure to repeat last season’s excellent performance.

Bayer Leverkusen had a stellar campaign, going 51 games unbeaten and claiming their first Bundesliga title under coach Xabi Alonso.

They also triumphed in the DFB Pokal, beating Kaiserslautern in the final, but fell just short of a treble, losing to Atalanta in the final of the competition.

Despite high expectations for next season, Boniface, who scored 21 goals and provided ten assists in 34 games last season, is unfazed. The 23-year-old forward stressed that the team is focusing on taking each game as it comes.

“We haven’t talked about next season yet, but we’re taking it step by step,” Boniface told the Counter Attack podcast. “Our immediate focus is on the friendlies against Arsenal and Lens, not the Super Cup final against Stuttgart.”

Boniface acknowledged that other teams would be more motivated to beat Bayer Leverkusen due to their achievements last season. However, he believes that the team’s success and the positive feelings it generated will push them to return to good form.

“We know what we did last year and how good we feel. We want to experience it again,” he added. “I am ready to give 100 percent to achieve what we did last year and I am sure the rest of the players feel the same.”

Bayer Leverkusen’s first game of the season will be against Stuttgart in the German Super Cup on August 17, followed by an away game at Borussia Mönchengladbach to kick off their Bundesliga campaign.
