Senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, on Tuesday apologized to the All Progressives Congress (APC) for his criticism of President Bola Tinubu.
Ndume was removed from his post as Senate Speaker last month after he publicly criticized the president over his handling of state affairs.
The senator, who was speaking on a programme on Arise TV, said President Tinubu had been locked up by his aides in Aso Rock.
He added that former President Muhammadu Buhari was a more accessible leader.
Following the attack on the president, the APC National Working Committee (NWC) in a letter addressed to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and signed by the National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, and the National Secretary, Ajibola Bashiru, recommended the removal of Ndume as Senate Chief Whip.
The party also nominated the senator representing Borno North, Mohammed Monguno, as the new party chairman.
The development sparked angry reactions from Nigerians, with many condemning the Red Chamber for making a mockery of the countryβs democracy.
In a chat with journalists after a meeting with the party’s NWC in Abuja, Ndume admitted that he was wrong to raise the issues on television and not to inform the party leadership.

He said: βYesterday, I was invited to a party and I am here to discuss family matters. In fact, the national chairman is not only the national chairman for me, but also a father. With what has happened that you all know, it is not surprising that I was invited to hear my point of view and we discussed in a family way.
“I accept the mistake of not talking to the party as a final point and I promise the party that all my observations as a senior member of the family should have ended or been terminated by the party. That is something I will do going forward.
“But whatever I say or whatever I do is out of patriotism and those issues may be said loudly but they are true but then I should have addressed the party as the last bus stop.
βMy membership, I was not expelled, even the party did not say we donβt want you here, because he is my father. The only thing the party said is look if you donβt want this house, you can go to any house. Where am I going to go? This is my house.β
Meanwhile, Ganduje said his party was satisfied with Ndume’s apology and would convey the same to the Senate leadership to review its position.
