Police arrest 2 Benin nationals for car theft in Lagos

Police officers in Lagos have arrested two Benin Republic nationals on suspicion of car theft.

State police spokesman, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrests to journalists on Thursday in Lagos.

He said the suspects, Kosoko Rafiu and Nunayo Sunayo, were arrested while trying to flee in a vehicle along the Mile 2/Badagry Highway on Tuesday.

The spokesman added that the suspects after hijacking the vehicle sped away to escape the police checkpoint but were eventually arrested in Abule Ado area of ​​the state.

Hundeyin said: “The suspects stole the vehicle at an event in the Anthony Village area of ​​the state.

“They are experts in stealing vehicles from various events in Nigeria and fleeing to their home countries.

“The suspects decided to steal the car while protests were ongoing in the state.

“They thought they could escape easily, thinking the police would only pay attention to protesters and not other crimes.

“However, luck was on their side after they stole the vehicle at around 12:00 am.

“Some police officers at the Trade Fair Complex on special duty during the ongoing protest received information that a red Toyota Corona vehicle was coming towards them.

“Officers were patrolling and monitoring the incident before suddenly seeing a car driving at high speed in a suspicious manner.

“The DPO immediately contacted his team to stop and search the vehicle. At that moment the suspects arrived at the police checkpoint, they immediately sped off again.

“The suspect was chased relentlessly and finally his vehicle was stopped in the Abule Ado area.

“The two suspects were immediately arrested along with their stolen vehicle.”
