Increased crude oil production is a result of ongoing oil theft attacks —Kyari

Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPC Ltd., Mr. Mele Kyari, has disclosed that the current onslaught on crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism has resulted in increased growth in the nation’s crude oil production.

This comes even as NNPCL Ltd top brass urged the military to continue the fight against the menace.

Ripples Nigeria noted that Nigeria has recorded an increase in crude oil production for two consecutive months. The country produced 1.3 million barrels of crude oil per day in July according to OPEC, up from 1.276 million barrels of crude oil per day in the previous month.

Kyari, while receiving the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa who led senior military officers on a courtesy visit to the NNPC Towers in Abuja, on Tuesday called for support for the attack.

“I personally call for enhanced and sustained security engagement. This is because we have reached a new peak in production that we have not seen in the last three years. This is obviously linked to the continued efforts by the armed forces and other security agencies to protect our critical assets, especially pipeline infrastructure in certain areas where we are working closely with these agencies. We are already seeing the results translate into increased production,” Kyari said.

The GCEO, who commended General Musa and his team for their steadfast commitment to securing the country’s critical hydrocarbon assets especially in the Niger Delta region in recent months, stressed that this achievement is not only significant for Nigeria but also for the global energy community.

He expressed confidence that the CDS and his team would carry out the President’s mandate to mitigate security-related challenges affecting the nation’s crude oil production.

“The components of this effort that depend on security were effectively managed by you. Your coordinated and focused response paved the way for increased security engagement, particularly in the Niger Delta,” he said.

Earlier in his remarks, General Musa said the visit was aimed at introducing the Monitoring Team to NNPC Ltd, which will be responsible for interacting with the Company and other stakeholders in the oil producing areas to secure the country’s critical hydrocarbon infrastructure.

While pledging commitment to improving the security and performance of its troops, the CDS said the military would maintain vigorous attacks and analyze the troops’ capabilities to enhance their performance and increase productivity.

He stressed the need to increase production for a prosperous economy and assured collaboration with intelligence agencies, private security, state governments and host communities for improved performance.

“Working alone will not yield the best results. I want to assure you that we will work together with the necessary stakeholders to achieve the targets set as mandated by the President.”
