Opposition lawmakers accuse PDP chairman and secretary of working for Wike, plotting against Rivers governor Fubara

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has accused the Acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Umar Iliya Damagum and the National Secretary of the party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu of plotting against Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.

The lawmakers, who made the allegations at a press conference on Saturday, claimed that Damagum and Anyanwu were working behind the scenes to sabotage Fubara’s administration.

They alleged that the two allegedly conspired to derail the ongoing legal battle against the defecting Rivers State House of Representatives member, who switched allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on behalf of the opposition coalition, Ikenga MP IMO Ugochinyere detailed what he described as a “calculated betrayal” by Damagum and Anyanwu.

He alleged that the two PDP leaders were actively undermining the party’s efforts to block APC defectors from legally challenging the PDP-led government in Rivers State. The alleged collusion, Ugochinyere warned, could pave the way for pro-Wike APC lawmakers to rise again and attempt to remove Governor Fubara from office.

Ugochinyere expressed concern that the legal battle, numbered PHC/2177/CS/2024, centred on the defection of 27 PDP lawmakers to the APC in December 2023.

He noted that the Rivers State High Court had earlier issued a restraining order against the defecting lawmakers, but former Governor Nyesom Wike allegedly retained legal representation to appeal the order without the party’s approval.

This move was opposed by the PDP National Legal Adviser, Mr. Ajibade, SAN, who sought to withdraw his appeal.

The lawmakers accused Damagum and Anyanwu of undermining the internal unity of the PDP and aiding the political ambitions of the APC. They alleged that the two had interfered in other legal matters in Abuja and Port Harcourt, all aimed at weakening the PDP in key areas.

Ugochinyere warned of serious consequences if these actions were not stopped, including the erosion of internal democracy, party divisions and loss of public trust. He called for immediate action to reassert the authority of the National Legal Adviser, legally restrain the Speaker and National Secretary from further interference and establish a disciplinary committee to investigate their actions.

“The PDP must stand united in the face of this betrayal,” Ugochinyere said. “We call on all party members and well-meaning Nigerians to join us in defending the integrity of our party and ensuring that justice is done.”

The opposition coalition vowed to continue defending the PDP from internal and external threats, and vowed to keep the public informed of further developments in the case.
