LP to boycott Anambra local council elections

The Labour Party has decided to boycott the September 28 local government elections in Anambra State.

The Publicity Secretary of the LP in the state, Mr. Theo Egbe, disclosed this to journalists on Thursday in Awka.

He said his party would also challenge the process in court over the failure of the Anambra State Electoral Commission to comply with election guidelines.

Egbe said: “The Labour Party will not play along with the irregularities identified, namely the failure to follow the provisions of the Electoral Act in the conduct of the council elections.

“The state template for the proposed elections must be in line with the National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines for conducting general elections.”

He urged the state government to reschedule the election to meet INEC’s electoral standards.

He alleged that the LP office in Anambra State was sealed by suspected government agents on August 27 without notice.

However, the spokesman appealed to LP members and the state public not to take the law into their own hands.
