Don’t Touch Obi, Senator Umeh warns those trying to lure Labour flagbearer

Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central and is a leader of the Labour Party (LP), on Thursday said those urging the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to leave the LP and move to another party were pursuing a “futile pursuit.”

Umeh made this statement during a Labour Party stakeholders meeting in Umuahia on Thursday.

The former Chairman of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) emphasized that Obi’s significant momentum in the 2023 election was largely due to the platform provided by LP. Therefore, it would not be right if he left the party without returning the support he received.

“Luring Peter Obi out of the Labour Party is not the right thing to do because the LP gave him the spotlight that made Nigerians accept him in the last election,” Umeh said.

“So whatever happens, he must build the party and continue to advance its interests. Those calling for him to leave the Labor Party may be chasing a losing battle.”

Umeh’s comments come amid speculation that Obi is under pressure to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), where he may be given a ticket to contest against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) with the full support of the PDP’s forces.

However, Umeh believes Obi would rather focus on building and strengthening LP ahead of the 2027 elections than leave the party.

“Peter Obi is a man of integrity, and I am sure he will not leave the party that gave him the platform to become a household name,” Umeh added. “Instead, he will work hard to make LP more resilient and competitive in the future.”
