Police arrest Edo train station attack suspect after 20 months

Police officers in Edo have arrested one of the suspects behind the attack on the Igueben train station in the state.

Armed men on January 7, 2023 attacked the train station and kidnapped several people at the facility.

Some victims were later released after the intervention of security agents.

The suspect identified as Jonas Ehis is also accused of killing Gazali Hassan on August 31.

State police spokesman Moses Yamu paraded the 26-year-old and 11 other criminals in Benin City on Friday.

The spokesman said the suspect was arrested along with two others by a police patrol team on September 1.

He said a Techno Spark 9 cellphone was found in the suspect’s possession.

“The call was made hands-free, and at that time the caller stated that the owner of the phone named Gazali Hassan went missing on August 31 along with his motorbike.

“Based on this information, we conducted an investigation and the results showed that the suspects had killed Gazali Hassan and stolen his motorbike.

Officers were later deployed to the scene along the Idumoza pipeline at Uromi in Esan North East local government area and recovered the body.

“Further investigations led to the arrest of seven additional suspects who had been terrorizing Edo Central senatorial district,” Yamu said.
