PDP Edo claims president disbursed $2 million to manipulate September 21 gubernatorial election

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the President of planning to rig the September 21 governorship election in Edo State in favor of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The state party chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi, who made the allegations in a statement on Saturday, claimed that the President had disbursed $2 million to the state APC which was meant to be used to compromise officials of the National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agents and voters to buy votes.

The PDP said the money was handed over to the APC governorship candidate, Monday Okpebholo, with specific instructions on how to disburse it.

The PDP also accused the President of ordering the National Security Adviser and the Department of State Services to disrupt elections in the party’s strongholds in order to manipulate the vote in favor of the APC.

Part of the statement reads:

“As part of the evil plan, the security chiefs have been ordered to make a massive deployment to the PDP strongholds, especially the bases of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, and our party candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, with a plan to disrupt the voting process in the area.

“Some polling station officials, registration officers and district election officers have been found to have APC membership cards.

“Their job, as we know, is to delay the results of their respective units with the aim of inciting violence and creating an unfavorable atmosphere during the election to benefit the APC candidates during the counting of results.”

The party further called on President Bola Tinubu to discharge his responsibilities as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and let the will of the people prevail by ensuring free, fair and credible elections in Edo State.

“The President must realise that maintaining the security and peace of Edo State and Nigeria is his primary responsibility and therefore must not allow the fear that his party will lose the upcoming governorship election in the state to disrupt peace and security and burn Edo State and Nigeria.”
