Ighodalo claims “blatant theft” of mandate in Edo election

Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party candidate in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, accused his opponents of “blatantly” stealing his mandate and condemned the subversion of the will of the voters.

In a statement on Monday, Ighodalo expressed gratitude to his supporters for their unwavering trust in him throughout the campaign. “First of all, in all things, we must give thanks to God. We thank God for the gift of life, health and the love you all have shown me,” he said.

He specifically acknowledged the resilience of the people, saying, “I want to express special gratitude to the good people of Edo State who defied the rain, intimidation, threats of violence, harassment, arrests and financial inducements to cast their votes for us unanimously last Saturday, September 21, 2024. You are the true heroes of our democracy, and your sacrifices for a better Edo State will never be forgotten.”

Ighodalo stressed that his political aspirations stemmed from a desire to serve, not a pursuit of power. “My aspirations are not born from a love of power, but from a genuine desire to serve the people and create a Path to Prosperity for All in Edo State,” he said. He recounted his engagement with residents in each district and local government area, and shared his vision.

He thanked his supporters, saying, “Together, we have run a great campaign, and your overwhelming support was evident on the ballot before our progress was unfairly halted on September 21, 2024 by people who meant no good to you or our country.”

Ighodalo lamented, “That day will forever be etched in our history as one of our darkest moments, marked by the blatant theft of our mandate and the shameful reversal of the will of the people.” However, he urged his supporters not to lose hope, saying, “The illusory triumph of evil over good is only temporary.”
