HURIWA slams Tinubu over ‘no free beer’ response to Nigeria’s plight

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has slammed President Bola Tinubu over his recent comments on the high cost of living in Nigeria.

President Tinubu on Friday urged Nigerians to remain patient despite the high cost of living, saying the country could no longer expect a “free bowl” without addressing its economic challenges.

Tinubu, who made the remarks when former members of the National Assembly visited him at the State House, Abuja, acknowledged the existence of hunger in the country but stressed that there was no “free beer shop.”

He uses metaphors to emphasize that real development takes time and effort.

The president said: “We have to work hard. We have been living in democracy for 25 years this year and we don’t want to make people hungry and angry. But we say be patient.

“No more free beer stalls. We will re-equip and rebuild our country through your cooperation.

However, HURIWA in a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, said the president’s words were meaningless as his administration continues to squander the budget while campaigning for austerity to its people.

The group pointed out the stark contrast between the administration’s words and actions, highlighting the billions spent on food, entertainment and expenses for the First Lady’s foreign travel.

The statement read: “It is unacceptable for the government to preach sacrifice and austerity while wasting billions of dollars on unnecessary spending.

“The president must take concrete action to address the high cost of living, not just pay lip service.”

HURIWA urged the Federal Government to adopt cost-cutting measures, stressing the need for fiscal responsibility and accountability.

HURIWA’s main demands:

– Immediate reduction in government spending on non-essential goods

– Increased transparency and accountability in federal spending

– Concrete actions to address food insecurity and high cost of living
