Enugu government summons traditional rulers over disguised attacks

The Enugu State Government has summoned traditional rulers and Presidents General of communities in Nsukka local government area where attacks carried out by masquerades led to the death of two persons.

The government also directed a full-scale investigation into the activities of the Oriokpa masquerade group in the region and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Violence broke out in the area earlier this week following alleged offenses by Oriokpa masqueraders who were also involved in the attack on a nurse in April.

Hundreds of women from Eha-Alumona, a community in Nsukka took to the streets on September 19 to protest the incessant attacks and harassment carried out by masquerades in the community.

The State Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Deacon Okey Ogbodo, confirmed the invitation of the monarchs in a statement on Friday in Enugu.

He said government had received reports of activities of masquerades in some areas of Nsukka which reportedly caused chaos, bodily injuries and loss of life in the area.

Ogbodo said: “Therefore, and following the firm directives of Governor Peter Mbah, the traditional rulers and Presidents General of the town unions of the affected communities are hereby invited to meet with me on Friday.

“The affected communities are Nguru, Isiakpu, Echara, Nru, Edem-Ezema, Iheagu, Ihe, Owere and Umuoyo.

“In addition, the Governor has also directed the Police Commissioner to immediately conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

“The investigation will include reports of casualties resulting from the undercover group’s activities in order to bring whoever is guilty to justice.”
