Akpoti-Uuduaghan faced withdrawal as a constituent to submit a petition to Inec

A group of constituents from the Central Kogi Senator District on Monday officially submitted a petition to the Independent National Election Commission (Inec) and called for the withdrawal of their representatives, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uuduaghan.

Parliamentary members, who are currently undergoing a suspension of six months from the Senate, are accused of violating and losing public confidence.

The petition entitled “Petition Constituent” for the withdrawal of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on the grounds of losing trust, “presented by the Ijese charity body on behalf of the applicants.

It was accepted at the Inec headquarters in Abuja by the Secretary of the Commission, Rose Anthony.

The Petitioners, who quoted part 69 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and the regulations and guidelines for the Petition of withdrawals, emphasized their dissatisfaction with the term of office of Akpoti-Uduaghan which began after the Decree of the Appeal Court in October 2023.

The petition reads: “This petition emerged from the loss of trust in the senator for reasons of big mistakes, abuse of position, avoidance of legal processes, and deceptive behavior patterns that not only embarrass the people of central kogi but have also tarnished the integrity of the Nigerian senate and the democratic institution of our country.”

The group claimed that their request was supported by a signature of more than half of the voters registered at Kogi Central, and urged Inec to “immediately begin the constitutional and procedural withdrawal process” and declare the empty Akpoti-Uduaghan seats.

The Senate on March 7 suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months for violating the Red Room rules.

This follows the accusations of sexual violence against the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.
