Stella Okafor, widow of late Nollywood comic actor John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has reacted to the controversy over the late actor’s property, which she was accused of selling after his death.
He explained that the decision to sell his house in Enugu for N17 million was made and implemented jointly by himself, his son from a previous marriage, and the actor’s family.
He spoke in an interview with content creator King Mitchy, saying Valentine and Daniel Okafor, two sons of Mr Ibu, together sold land in Enugu for N17 million.
“Before they sold the land, we were still in the village, and they (the children and family) were arguing with me over the money they gave me at the funeral. They insisted that I should share the money with them. I told them that the money was for my children. It was N500,000,” he said.
“The land for sale in Enugu, the three of us sold the land because of burial. It cost N17 million. Go and ask the kids.”
“We (my husband’s son) sold the house). It wasn’t me who sold the house. We sold the house.”
His defense came after days of backlash from the public following his request for financial assistance.
Stella has asked for public support, revealing that her family has experienced a two-month power cut, and her children have been sent home from school due to unpaid fees. His appeal reportedly raised donations of over N7 million.
But Somtochukwu Okafor, the actor’s third son, rejected his stepmother’s claims of financial difficulties, accusing him of selling some properties after Mum’s death.
The Tenkobo actor also criticized Stella, accusing her of exploiting her late husband’s inheritance to solicit donations.
However, the controversy deepened when a woman claiming to be Mr. Ibu’s first wife accused Stella of financial mismanagement and arranging the arrest of two of her relatives during the actor’s illness.
He accused Stella of selling the late actor’s properties without consulting other family members, including a plot of land in Enugu, reportedly worth N18 million and a house in Lagos.
Responding to these accusations, Stella admitted that her husband never told her that he had a child from a previous relationship before they married.
“My husband never told me that he was married before. Even my first son, I kept seeing him at home. My husband never told me for a single day that he was his son. Even in his marriage to him, he impregnated a woman who gave birth to twins,” she added.
