Because governors, deputies no longer have to enjoy immunity – Gbenga Daniel

A former government governor and senator of Ogun who represents the senatorial district of Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, asked for the removal of the constitutional immunity currently enjoyed by state governors and their deputies, saying that it promotes impunity and protects them from responsibility.

Daniel, who participated in the Channels television on Tuesday, said that many governors abused the privilege of immunity transforming their respective states into personal ownership and acting above the law.

According to the senator, while the clause on immunity can have a merit, it has been largely used by state managers who often ignore legislative controls and act without consequences.

“Some of them have practically transformed the state into their personal fief and think that the property of the state belongs to them, and they can do it whatever they want, without even resorting to the assembly house,” Daniel complained.

He insisted on the fact that while the president and vice -president should preserve full immunity as a symbolic leader of the country who need to protect harassment and distractions, the same should not be extended to the leaders at a state level.

“I think that only the president and vice -president should be authorized to have an absolute immunity so that they can concentrate, and so that nobody embarrassed the symbol of the country,” he said.

Daniel also claimed that governors and their deputies should not be protected by civil and administrative control while they were in office, even if they are protected by criminal actions.

“There is no reason why they should not be held responsible while they are in office,” he said.

His comments come among the growing national conversations on constitutional reforms and require greater transparency and responsibility in governance at all levels.
