‘I am close to Tinubu without joining APC’ —Abia Gov Otti

State Governor Abia Alex Otti has rejected the suggestion that he needs to defect to the decision of all Progressives Congress (APC) to maintain good relations with the President of the Tinubu Bola, stating that he has enjoyed direct access to the President.

Comments on the Governor of the Labor Party came a few days after the Governor of the State Delta Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor IFEI Okowa, and several members of the PDP Parliament in the state officially joined the APC. Okowa, who is a vice presidential candidate for 2023 PDP, has justified their defeat as needed to “connect the Delta State to ASO Rock.”

However, in an interview with Arise television on Friday, Otti rejected this political calculus. “I was even closer to the center than some of them,” the governor stated when asked whether he planned to follow their example.

“The Governor of Otti is not approaching, and my party is not on the land that is shaky,” he said firmly. “This is a democracy, and Ball President Ahmed Tinubu holds the alliance for democracy, the action congress, and the Nigerian action congress before becoming APC. If he defected, he will not be president today. Sometimes, you also have to defend something.”

The Governor’s statement came in the midst of the ongoing leadership crisis within the labor party. When pressed about the future of his politics, Otti still did not commit to: “I am not God. I can’t say whether there will still be LP tomorrow.”

He confirmed that the current party transition state, noted that “National Party Chairperson, Julius Abure, is no longer a party leader, because his term of office has expired,” with the guard committee who is now overseeing party affairs.

Otti’s attitude highlighted the increasing political tension because more opposition figures were flawed towards the ruling parties. His insistence on maintaining independence while fostering the president’s access to present alternative models of opposition governance, even when his own party faces existential challenges.

Political analysts suggest that Otti’s position reflects self -confidence in his personal relationship with Tinubu and strategic positions ahead of the future elections, with Governor Abia emerged as a rare opposition figure who is able to navigate the complex Nigerian political landscape without formal harmony with the ruling party.
