30% of Lagos Shun workers return after a foreign training

The state government of Lagos has raised concerns about the growing trend of public employees after being sponsored for training abroad.

Tuesday the commissioner for establishments and training, Ayantayo Afolabi, revealed that 30 % of the beneficiaries sponsored by the state do not return to the country upon completion of their programs.

Ayantayo made the revelation during the briefing for the annual ministerial press in progress held at the Bagaudada Kalth Press Center, Alausa, Ikeja.

Briefing is part of the activities that mark the second year in the second mandate of the governor Babajide Sanwo-El.

The commissioner complained that although the government remains engaged in the development of human capital, with over 23,000 workers trained between May 2022 and December 2024, many public employees benefit from these opportunities to move permanently abroad.

“Of those sent abroad for training, only 70 %has returned. The rest is on the run looking for more green pastures,” said Ayantayo.

He added that during the period over 185 training programs were conducted during the period in the revision phase, cutting on various paintings and skills relevant to the supply of public services. In addition, about 8,000 employees received approval for study leave.

Ayantayo also highlighted the state investment in well -being, including a N35,000 wage prize and a review of the minimum wage.

In the health sector, he noticed the provision of the training fund for the medical residence (MRTF), the rural allowances for healthcare professionals and bonus packages for the staff of the Lagos State College of Medicine.

However, the commissioner refused to disseminate the details of the severance indemnity paid to the appointed politicians and officials elected, stating only that the payments were in line with the federal guidelines.
