Jamb to hold a release test for the absent UTME candidate

The Joint Acceptance and Matriculation Council (Jamb) has decided to conduct additional examinations for candidates who missed the Tertiary Matriculation Examination this year (UTME).

Clerk Jamb, Prof. Is-Haq Oloyede said this was on Wednesday in Abuja at a meeting with the main stakeholders to overcome the challenges faced during UTME.

He said the council would accommodate an estimated 5.6 percent candidate who missed the exam by setting special release training.

He added that Jamb had given an opportunity for all affected candidates, regardless of the reason for their absence.

Oloyede said: “Usually, we hold a national release for those who have one problem or another.

“But this time, we created a new release. Even those who missed the previous examination because there was no, we would give this opportunity to them.

“It’s not that we do something extraordinary; In class, you make an exam when students miss it because one or another is the reason; we just do not allow the abuse.

“So we will allow all candidates to miss the main test for any reason to take part in this release.”

Registrar also clarified that UTME is placement and not a testing test.

According to him, the purpose of the exam is to rank candidates for space available in institutions and not measure intelligence or overall academic potential.

He said UTME’s high score was not the only determinant of entry, adding that the combined performance, including post-UTME scores and school assessments, could significantly affect the ranking of candidates.

“I want to say this clearly, especially because I accept responsibility, not because I don’t know how to do the work.

“I say it for the fourth time that there is no conspiracy theory that is relevant to this case.

“Something happens, like people who have done something well for years, and something wrong. That I now have to throw it under the bus? No,” he said.

Oloyede, who frowned in the difficulty that exploited to promote ethnic narratives, urged stakeholders to stop ethnic profiles in the education sector.

He stressed that many criticisms of Jamb operations were rooted in ignorance.
