Airlines at risk of sanctions to transport passengers without a valid visa to Nigeria

The federal government has issued a stern warning to the international airline operating in Nigeria, reminding that operators carrying passengers without legal entered visas, landing, and outgoing cards will face sentences.

Speaking at a sensitization program held in Lagos on Friday, the Minister of Home Affairs Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo said Nigeria’s commitment to facilitate trips through the new e-visa platform should not sacrifice national security.

“No foreigners are allowed to enter Nigeria without a legitimate visa,” the Minister stated to the audience included in the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), airline representatives, and Nigerian Immigration Service personnel (NIS). “The airline has the task of verifying that passengers have more than just a receipt of payment or flight ticket, they must have a legal Nigeria visa.”

Tunji-ojo stressed that while the government is determined to modernize the entry procedures and open countries for investors and tourists through digital systems, airline operators must also share in the responsibility of upholding the Immigration Law.

“That is not acceptable in the UK, the US, or Canada for people to go up without a visa. It also will not be accepted in Nigeria,” he said firmly. “NCAA must ensure strict compliance with the Nigerian visa policy 2025.”

Since the introduction of the e-visa system on May 1, the Minister revealed that 5,814 applications have been received by NIS. Of this amount, 5,671 was approved, 66 was rejected, and 62 was asked, a demonstration, he said, about Nigeria’s commitment to the complete test and even in the digital age.

The e-visa system, landing, and exit, he explained, not only about increasing comfort but also increasing national security. Each document is embedded with a bar code that immediately reveals the biodata and history of a traveler’s journey.

“This technology helps us manage our borders more intelligently,” said Tunji-Ojo. “And meanwhile makes the application easier, it does not guarantee approval. Applicants must meet our entry requirements.”

Chris Najomo, Director General of NCAA, described this initiative as an important step to harmonize with the best international practice, including compliance with Appendix 9 International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which regulates the facilitation of international air transportation.

“This system enhances experience for legitimate travelers while strengthening border security,” Najomo said. “This is a victory for national interests and operational efficiency.”

Kemi Nandap, the controller General NIS, echoed to call for a greater synergy between institutions and stakeholders. “Collaboration is the key to implementing this reform successfully and without reducing security or service delivery,” he said.

E-visa reform is expected to increase Nigerian immigration database, strengthen investor confidence, and position the country as a competitive goal in a rapid growing global economy.
