Customs Prevention ₦ 39m gasoline, vehicle worth ₦ 24m from smuggling

Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), through the enforcement team, especially what is known as Operation Whirwind, has seized gasoline worth ₦ 39,425,000 and a vehicle worth ₦ 24,000,000, making a total of more than ₦ 63 million, in the new Klemdown in the smugglers along the Lagos-Ost Corridor.

According to a statement issued on Sunday by the National Coordinator of the Wirelwind Operations, Assistant of the Financial Supervisory General (ACG) Hussein Ejibunu, the seizure marked a significant step in the battle against economic sabotage.

“There is no safe place for smuggling or economic patient. We will continue to interfere with their activities and reduce it to the minimum at least,” Ejibunu swear.

The success of the operation came when officers intercepted 1,577 Jerrycans each 25 liters – with a total of 39,425 liters of the spirit of premium motorbike – along with eight vehicles used to deliver gasoline that was smuggled.

ACG Ejibunu stated, “Investigation revealed that the product was bound to illegal exports across the border to the Benin Republic.”

He detailed the targeted area during the raid, noting, “Seizures occur in key smuggling hotspots including Ilaro, Imeko, Badagry, Owode, and Ajilete.”

To directly benefit the public and reduce market scarcity, Customs and Excise Supervisors, Adewale Adeniyi, have approved the direct auction of the confiscated fuel at the subsidized level of 10,000 per jerrycan.

Ejibunu further acknowledged the critical support of strategic partners: “We appreciate the cooperation of the National Security Advisory Office, Midstream Nigeria and the downstream oil regulatory authority, and the Attorney General’s Office.”

On his party, the Zonal Coordinator for the ‘A’ zone, ACG Charles Orbih, praised the achievement of sustainable operations, saying, “This important achievement reflects an unwavering determination and commitment from our officers to maintain Nigerian economic and national security.”
