Abuja (basic reporter) The executive secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Tony Ojukwu (San) urged the federal government to recognize equity and justice to recognize all the heroes of democracy, from the presidential elections of 12 June 1993, were judged free and right and the winners of the elections have been recognized.
Dr. Ojukwu in the declaration to commemorate the day said: “Remembering the heroes of democracy and justice of 12 June Democracy Day, the executive secretary advised the justice to recognize all the heroes of 12 June together, politicians and public employees. Such a position of the government helps to guarantee democracy.
“If the presidential elections of 12 June 1993 were judged free and right and the winners of the elections have been recognized, both alive and posturami, then there is justice in recognizing that the elections themselves were conducted by human beings and spirits.
“The arrow tips of the presidential elections of 12 June 1993 in the National Electoral Commission (NEC) should be recognized and have given adequate and immortalized national honors in public institutions as part of the Justice of 12 June and Foundation for Democracy in Nigeria. The delayed justice has been denied”, insisted.
While the NHRC was combined with the Nigerians in commemorating the day of 2025 democracy, honoring those who fought for the democratic government, Ojukwu has urged the Nigerians to reflect so far on our journey and reaffirm our commitment for justice, equality, peace and human dignity.

He also said that the Commission also continued to monitor the elections to guarantee compliance with human rights standards, working tirelessly to promote free, equitable and credible polls.
He observed that before the general elections of 2023, the Commission held the municipalities for presidential and government candidates, ensuring that they traditional human rights in governance when they are elected to power. This initiative underlined the commitment of the Commission in the possession of leaders responsible for the protection of human rights that he underlined. We intend to continue this trend, engaging with elected and aspiring officials to give priority to human rights in their governance, he added.
“In the NHRC we recognize the intrinsic link between human rights and democracy, in which the protection of fundamental rights is essential for sustainable development”. He added: “While celebrating our democratic results, we honor the heroes of democracy who have worked tirelessly towards a Nigeria in which governance will be responsible, the rights are protected and every citizen has the opportunity to live in peace and dignity”.
“However, we notice with concern the growing insecurity and economic difficulties that threaten the dignity and the rights of many Nigerians. The Commission urges governments at all levels to give priority to the protection of human rights and human life, to guarantee justice for the victims and face the radical causes of violence, injustice and economic difficulties.
“We are committed to promoting, protecting and applying human rights throughout the country. We ask all the Nigerians to collaborate with us in the safeguarding of democratic ideals that bind us together.
