Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday challenged African leaders to re -examine their governance system to achieve the resurrection on the continent.
The former president made a call at the 32th annual meeting of Afreximbank (AAM2025) in Abuja.
He stressed that the progress of Africa depends on the ability of its leaders to work and move together and prioritize the interests of continents.
Obansanjo noted that the current Liberal Democratic System, which was inherited from colonial forces, did not work for the best interests of the continent and must be interrogated and reviewed in accordance with African interests.
He suggested that the African pre-colonial government system, which emphasized communalism and collective decision making, could provide valuable lessons for modern governance and stop corruption.
“Our system does not see opposition and government. So it must be the government of all people who work together. We have it before the emergence of colonialism.
“Now is the time to say that the government and opposition do not work for us, it doesn’t even work for them either. Our systems and democracy have been monetized,” the former Nigerian leader recorded.
Obasanjo regretted that Nigeria, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and South Africa were not in the places they were supposed to do economically and politically.
“How many worlds are understood by our leaders? What is owed by the world as Africans?
“If we know, we will get the right policy ranging from the level of the community to the national, sub-regional, and continent level, and the policy will be related to the situation of the world where we are,” he concluded.
