Scheduled to keep from July 25 to 26 at the Muda Lawal Stadium, Abeokuta, the Zonal Qualifier of the Southwest will produce the only representative of the region for the national finals of the Veterans Cup, an annual competition aimed at promoting camaraderie and the participation sustained in football among retired and veteran players.

While welcoming the delegation led by the president of the association, Alhaji Salman Akinbo, Hon. Isiaka praised the Abeokuta All Stars Football Association for its consistency in promoting football development at the base, especially among veteran players who continue to serve as models to follow within the community.

“The Government of the State of Ogun recognizes the contributions of veteran soccer players to the growth of the game and society. We are proud to support this tournament, which aligns with our vision of inclusive sports development,” said the commissioner.

Alhaji Akinbo, in his comments, congratulated the commissioner for the successful organization of Gateway 2024 Games, which pointed it out as a testimony of the growing government commitment to sports. He also used the visit to inform the commissioner about the preparation of the association to offer a zonal event without a hitch, while looking for logistical and administrative support from the Ministry.

The eventual winner of the qualifier housed in Abeokuta will join the counterparts of other regions and the host state, Lagos, for the final phase of the competition later in the year.

The Veterans Cup continues to win traction as a platform to unite retired soccer players, promote community -based sports activities and promote active lifestyles after retirement.
