The former defender of Super Eagles, Abiodun Obafemi, has declared a radical verdict in support of the exclusion of the players in the Nigeria team’s home for the next two qualifiers of the FIFA 2026 World Cup in September, reports Sports247.
The former International Center, who played for clubs in France and Germany during its peak, calculated that the poor that the boys had at home in the African nations championship this year (Chan 2024) spoiled their possibilities to make the last list of squadrons of the main team.
However, with a 15 -year -old shot, Ebenezer Harcourt as the only one in Nigeria’s team to Chan 2024 and already included in a provisional list of guests of 31 players for the games next month, Obafemi admitted that the final decision of the home -based invitations meets the coach, Eric Chelle.
Obafemi added: “Honestly, they did not do well to justify being included in the new list. Honestly, for what I saw, they do not deserve it.
“But then, the coach saw them daily, and it is very difficult to judge a player with just a tournament. That is something important about the football game.
“As a coach, I am very sure that they must have studied them well daily. Therefore, it may feel that, perhaps one or two of them could still have a chance.”
However, while admitting that Chelle could decide to add one or two players of the Nigeria Professional Soccer League (NPFL) in his immediate plans, Obafemi calculated that he would depend on what the Franco-Malian tactic saw them during training, not based on his games in Chan 2024.
Obafemi, who was in the winning team of the Nigerian Gold Medal at the Atlanta ’96 Olympic Games, presented: “It would not be based on his performances in the Chan Tournament, but on what he saw in training every day.
“Perhaps one or two of them deserve to be in the main team; that would be their decision. But, if we, as Nigerians, we must judge them for what we saw in Chan, I do not think anyone of them deserves to be there. None of them deserves to be there. I must confess.”
