Pula Foundation, partner of the Nigerian government to revolutionize agricultural insurance

Abuja (Core reporter) The Pula Foundation, in collaboration with the Coordination Presidency of Food Systems (PFSCU) and the Bayer Foundation, has launched an innovative agricultural insurance initiative to improve the resilience of the agricultural sector of Nigeria. The partnership aims to provide methodologies of mitigation of agricultural risk of climate to about 248,000 small farmers in eight states, including Ekiti, Plateau, Kaduna, Enugu, Jigawa, Borno, Nasarawa and Taraba.

This innovative initiative is part of the National Agriubusiness Planning Mechanism program), co-creating by Pfscu, Pula and Bayer. The main objective of the program is to ensure that Nigerian farmers undertake in methodologies of mitigation of the climatic resporting agricultural risk, thus improving the yields of crops and reducing the losses due to the risks related to the climate.

The partnership received strong support from state governments, with eight states already on board as part of a pilot program. State governors have shown their commitment to compensate their farmers with promptly paid prizes, which will be combined by a commitment of the bases of Pula and Bayer for four seasons. Leadway insurance will act as a favorite insurance agency to harmonize and guarantee the insurance coverage of the program for each farmer.

According to Marion Moon, executive secretary of Pfscu, “involving directly with those who implement policies and systems, we acquire valuable information on the specific challenges they face. Understanding these weaknesses is crucial for the development of effective solutions”.

Rose Goslinka, executive director of the Pula Foundation, observed that “throughout sub-Saharan Africa, small farmers are the foundation of national and regional economies, unless time proves to be unpredictable and their crops fail. The solution is insurance, vast, vast scale and a very low and convenient cost”. This visionary approach underlines Pula’s commitment to support the Nigerian government and state governors in their search for food security, sustainable agricultural practices and climatic resilience.

Dr. Michael Enahoro, director of the country of Pula Nigeria, underlined that “leading the responsibility for the mitigation of risk with the individual farmer allows for productivity improvements, guarantees that the agronomic efforts of the agricultor are not wasted and eventually benefits both the government and consumers”.

The partnership should increase and cover multiple value chains, integrate more farmers and support Nigeria’s research to eradicate catastrophes related to climate change and guide sustainable food systems. The Pula Foundation and its partners currently focus on the guarantee of the expansion of the NAPM in the second phase, which is the dry season of 2025, and encouraging all state governments to collaborate with the PFSCU to ensure that all Nigerian farmers participate in the agricultural exercise of the dry season of 2025 where possible.

State officials, including the Hon. Ebenezer Boluwade and Samson Bugama, commissioners for agriculture in the states of Ekiti and plateau, have expressed their commitment in the program, while the governor Abdullahi on the state of Nasarawa believes that the participation of the State in the Napm program will lead to the improvement and sustainable development of agriculture in Nasarawa.

The initiative is a significant step towards improving the resilience of the agricultural sector of Nigeria and the promotion of sustainable food systems. With the support of state governments, the Pula Foundation and its partners, the program is ready to have a lasting impact on the life of Nigerian farmers.
