The Confederation of African football (CAF) has increased the number of teams participating in the Female Africa (Wafcon) Nations Cup from 12 to 16.

The new format will take effect from the 2026 edition of the tournament. The decision was announced after the meeting of the CAF executive committee held in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The competition next year, scheduled for the straight line in Morocco, was initially scheduled for 12 nations. However, with the expansion now approved, CAF can add another qualifying round to allow multiple countries to compete for the four extra slots.

The Wafcon, which began as eight teams tournament in 1998, has continued to grow over the years. The 2022 edition in Morocco had 12 teams and recorded higher frequency and transmission data.

The CAF also increased investments in women’s football. The cash prize for the last tournament increased by 45 percent to $ 3.45 million, with the Nigeria champions who received $ 1 million after winning their tenth title.

The president of Caf Patrice Motsepe said that the decision shows the commitment of the organization in the development of women’s football in Africa.

“I am happy with the progress we have done in women’s football. Our goal is to ensure that both men and women can make a career from football,” Motsepe said.

With 16 teams now confirmed for 2026, the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations should become more competitive and offer more opportunities for players throughout the continent.
