The Benue government confirmed 17 LGAs were affected by herdsmen attacks

Executive Secretary of the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA), Dr. James Iorpuu, stated on Wednesday that 17 of the 23 local governments in the state were affected by attacks by herdsmen.

Iorpuu told journalists in Makurdi that only Ogbadibo, Ohimini, Konshisha, Gboko, Ushongo and one other were not affected.

The executive secretary, who is also the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, said that the attacks, among other things, left hundreds of thousands of Benue residents homeless and financially incapacitated.

He urged the Federal Government to dredge the Benue and Niger Rivers; otherwise, to address the country’s flooding problem.

He explained that the recently concluded State Emergency Management Agency conference in Lagos had broadened the horizons of emergency managers across the state.

Iorpuu said Governor Alia’s performance exceeded their expectations.

He dismissed claims by independent assessors that Benue, under Alia’s watch, had underperformed.

“For the governor to have not borrowed money from any financial institution since taking office is a clear indication of purposeful leadership and accountability,” he said.

He said, “Mandate Divine”, the group that lobbied Alia to take part in the 2023 gubernatorial election, was proud of her achievements so far.

Iorpuu said the second phase would be launched towards the end of the year to showcase and sell it in time for the 2027 elections.
