Activist Aisha Yesufu deplores the attacks and killings of Nigerian soldiers by terrorists

Human rights activist and co-founder of the BringBackOutGirls movement, Aisha Yesufu, deplored the incessant attacks and killings of Nigerian soldiers by terrorists, and called on the National Assembly to enact laws that will protect troops in various theaters of operations across the country.

The activist who made the call in a post on his X account on Thursday, described what he called the silence of the people’s representatives amid the killing of Nigerian soldiers by rebels as worrying.

Yesufu said his concerns arose after recent videos were shared on social media platforms by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants, who were responsible for coordinated attacks in several parts of the state, leading to the killing of a number of people, including soldiers.

In one of the reports, the militants were said to have raided the 82 Division Task Force Battalion in Gwoza, Borno State where they reportedly attacked an internally displaced person camp in the community.

They were also said to have ransacked communities while searching for soldiers believed to be hiding, setting fire to armored tanks and military vehicles before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of ammunition.

In his post, Yesufu lamented the increasing number of soldiers lost in the war against insurgency and questioned the role of lawmakers in protecting the interests of the Nigerian people and the welfare of military personnel.

“We are losing soldiers in very dire circumstances. Where is the National Assembly? They were elected to represent the people and protect the interests of the people!” he wrote.

“Who do they call to ask what’s going on? What laws have they put in place to ensure soldiers and their families are protected?

“What happens to the families of our slain heroes? What is the National Assembly doing to protect their interests?

“Not having a Commander-in-Chief is one thing, but having a passive and controlled National Assembly is a disaster,” he added.
