A heavy firefight between troops and suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in Kukawa local government area of Borno state has resulted in casualties on both sides, security sources said on Monday.

Sources told Zagazola Makama that the clash began when insurgents launched an attack on a military camp, prompting troops to engage them in a prolonged firefight.

Security officials said exploitation of the camp was still ongoing after the encounter.

Items recovered from insurgent positions within the camp included bandoliers of PKT ammunition, an AK-47 rifle, a BHT machine gun, two mortar bombs and four hand grenades.

According to sources, bloodstains and drag marks were also found outside the camp, which suggests that some insurgents may have been injured or killed during the clash.
