The prime ministers and heads of government of Canada, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland reached an agreement in Oslo on March 15 to deepen cooperation in the defense industry, economy and security in the Arctic.
The meeting is part of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s strategy to build a new alliance of middle powers to reduce dependence on the United States.
Speaking to Sweden’s new Prime Minister for Development Ulf Kristersson and his Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen they stressed that the agreement marks the birth of a middle power that will make a huge difference in the current global geopolitical landscape.
“It’s really nice to see the most Nordic country outside of the Nordic countries in a meeting in the Nordic countries. I think it’s a sign of our time, honestly, that the five Nordic countries and Canada are working so well together. That proves your case. The middle powers make a big difference,” Kristersson said.
Prime Minister Frederiksen referred to Canadian Mark Carney’s recent speech in Davos, to underline the seriousness of their new security and defense initiative.
He said: “I’ve never experienced anything like the speech you gave in Davos. I mean, people in Denmark talked about it, they read your speech. And I don’t think I’ve ever heard so many reflections on a speech from a colleague.”
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Carney is reportedly leading a new trading bloc that will include the EU and Indo-Pacific countries, totaling around 39 countries, which will constitute a large trade balance for the “middle powers”.
