FG closes 3 Ogun factories over safety violations

The Federal Government of Nigeria has closed down three manufacturing companies in Ogijo, Ogun State, over serious workplace safety violations.

The enforcement action was carried out on Wednesday by the Minister of Labor and Employment, Mrs. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, during an inspection focused on compliance with occupational health and safety.

The affected companies include African Refractory and Allied Products (ARAP), African Non-Ferrous Industries Ltd. and Metalworld Recycling Ltd. Meanwhile, Vedanta Metal Industries Ltd. has been issued a warning and instructed to improve its management standards.

Speaking during the briefing, Onyejeocha said the decision follows repeated failures by the companies to address security concerns despite previous warnings issued in December 2025.

It revealed that factories had been formally notified of breaches, including a lack of risk training and failure to provide adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) to workers.

According to the minister, companies ignored official directives and did not take corrective measures, putting workers’ lives at risk.

He expressed concern about reported incidents linked to factories, saying several deaths had been associated with unsafe practices, many of which had not been adequately documented.

Onyejeocha stressed that enforcement actions will be taken in line with existing labor and safety laws, adding that affected companies will face sanctions.

The minister also reiterated that factory operators must comply with regulatory procedures, especially when changing production processes or upgrading facilities.

He noted that such modifications require official approval and certification to ensure they meet national safety standards.

While acknowledging the importance of industrial growth, Onyejeocha stressed that the protection of human lives must remain a top priority.

He urged businesses across Nigeria to strictly adhere to workplace safety regulations to prevent avoidable tragedies.
