Like Tinubu, the Kano governor gave appointees seeking elective office a deadline to resign

Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Yusuf, has directed all political appointees interested in contesting the 2027 elections to resign from office, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

The direction was contained in a statement issued by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, on Wednesday.

Ripples Nigeria reports that President Bola Tinubu has issued similar directives to his ministers recently.

According to a statement by the governor’s aide, the order was conveyed through an official circular signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Umar Ibrahim, stressing the need for strict compliance with existing electoral laws.

The circular notes that the decision is in line with Article 88(1) of the 2026 Election Law, which regulates the participation of public office holders in partisan political activities.

He added that this step aims to encourage neutrality, accountability and integrity in public services, while ensuring equality for all candidates.

“Political officials who wish to take part in the upcoming elections are required to resign or retire, as applicable, on or before Tuesday, March 31, 2026,” the statement read.

The government further directed all Ministries, Departments and Agencies to provide wide publicity and ensure full compliance.
