I love how the description implies that The Freak Circus doesn't have a REAL FREAK and that Jestyn is, when this mf would fit right the hell in. Obviously a much different character type, but I really like that both games play into a sort of accurate historical role or lore of various different performers- the Lovesick Pierrot and his love rival the dastardly Harlequin being taken straight out of the original performance type that popularized their performer archetypes, and Jester, the 'puppet' of the king who pulls the strings behind the operation. Obviously with some variation in stylistic choices (though the TFC dev has released sketches of Pierrot's original/classic all white outfit- the fanart has been super cute), I honestly do dig them. I'm also biased not being a big fan of historical clothes lol.
That's not to say I'm not as interested in stories like Circus Alert! or anything, they all have their charm, and I do appreciate this steady drip feed of performer-based visual novels and murder circuses. I do. I want more murder circuses and killer performers.
So far Jestyn has not drugged, kidnapped, or tied us up. All he did was make us play house and broke into our house… both of which Pierrot has done and one of which Harlequin did.
I'm shocked that Clock didn't make a comment about the chocolate being drugged. This pupper-person-thing has been living in this run down and vandalized theme park for decades- does it even have a kitchen??? "It's not just any ordinary chocolate" "I crafted every step of it" "I hope you savour it"
(Or rather, he made such a passing comment on it I was expecting so much more).
… Imagine if he just drugged the water. Like the chocolate is fine, a little spicy, but you have let your guard down, and then he ~kindly~ hands you a class of water that IS drugged.
I think it's really cool that Jester says the King has died- and yet he bears a crown upon his head a skeletal mouth taking over a part of his face- is it a testament of how he used to be the king (puppet)? Or is it a layer of storytelling and monarchy rejection commenting on the fact that the /real/ rulers of the court were on the floor and not on the throne? The King may have sat in front of the kingdom, but it wasn't really his word as rule.
He has a LOT of subtle movements it catches me off guard and makes me feel bad I'm only half paying attention. There's SO much art. He does also genuinely fit a Jester archetype- he's constantly insulting you, using a thin veil of 'humor' while telling you the harsh truths you perhaps need to hear…. Me? I just look at him like a sad little cat.
I fear I cannot knock the names in this game Jestyn and Knighter are silly stupid names, but I fear this will one day be me. I'm going to put my ass and heart into some sick ass character designs and then get to the name and go "… Just name this mf whatever. No one will notice, I'll pick some puns" and then my sick ass character design is going to be forever tacked onto a silly name.
My partner does not wake up for another two hours and I am taking it like a cat who has just been shut out of the bathroom. It's been too long. There are claw marks on the door. Neighbors are debating calling an animal rescue. I sit with my lonely yowls echoing through the hallway. If this video does not placate me like a red laser pointer dot I will begin biting… again.
