Catholic diocese denies reports of attack on Kukah residence – THIS INFORMATION

The Catholic Diocese of Sokoto has rejected allegations that Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah’s residence, next to the cathedral and a billion-dollar Catholic pastoral centre, was set on fire.

In a statement released Saturday, the diocese clarified that all facilities mentioned in the video remain safe, intact and fully operational.

The statement, signed by the Director of Communications, Rev. P. Pascal Salifu, described the viral video used to spread the complaint as the work of individuals intent on causing panic and destabilizing society.

“Our attention has been drawn to a misleading and false video currently circulating online with the caption: ‘Breaking!!! Bishop Kukah’s house, cathedral and 1 billion Naira Catholic pastoral centers have been set on fire by Islamists in Sokoto.

“We wish to inform the general public that this information is totally false,” the statement read.

According to the diocese, the video began trending following the 2022 murder of Deborah Yakubu, a student of Shehu Shagari College of Education in Sokoto, suggesting it was recirculated to inflame tensions.

The Bishop, the note adds, expressed appreciation to the military and state security agencies for their rapid response to the appearance of the video.

“The bishop’s residence, cathedral and Catholic Pastoral Center in Sokoto remain safe, intact and fully operational,” he added.

However, the Diocese expresses gratitude to the armed forces and state security bodies who responded to the video that began to circulate.

“Sokoto remains calm and peaceful.”

The diocese also reassured residents that Sokoto remains calm and peaceful, urging the public to ignore the false claims.

“He extends his cordial greeting and benevolence to all the faithful and people of good will and wishes everyone a joyful and grace-filled Easter in advance,” the statement concludes.
