‘Misinterpretation of assessment,’ Sokoto ADC blames INEC for removal of national leadership

The Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State, Alhaji Bello Isiyaku-Kigan, on Monday assured that the leadership of his party remains intact both at the state and national levels.

He described a misinterpretation of the court’s decision, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which removed the party leadership.

Isiyaku-Kigan told journalists at Monday’s press conference in Sokoto that the leadership dispute was started in court by a party member, Nafi’u Bala.

He said: “We view this development as a disturbing move that could undermine democracy and the constitutional rights of political parties in Nigeria.

“The timing of this action raises serious concerns, especially as opposition parties seek to strengthen cooperation ahead of the 2027 elections.

“ADC remains a law-abiding political party with well-established internal and legal mechanisms for resolving leadership disputes.”

Isiyaku-Kigan said recent political developments had created confusion among members and the public, especially regarding the status of the party’s national leadership.

He explained that the court had previously directed that the status quo be maintained pending further hearings and warned that any contrary interpretation was misleading.

“The court decision clearly states that the status quo must remain. Any action that suggests dissolution of the leadership will give rise to mischief and unnecessary doubt,” the ADC chief added.

He said INEC’s interpretation of the decision was “wrong and mischievous”, adding that the matter would be challenged legally for the sake of clarity and fairness.

Its chairman confirmed that the party’s current leadership remains legitimate and will continue to direct its affairs ahead of the 2027 general elections.
