The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has expanded Nigeria’s crude oil supply with the successful introduction of a new blend, Cawthorne, into the international market.

The company’s head of corporate communications, Andy Odeh, made this known in a statement released to journalists on Tuesday.

Odeh confirmed that the first shipment had already been exported.

According to the statement, the first cargo of 950,000 barrels was loaded on April 5, 2026 on board the vessel MT Eburones and transported to the Netherlands.

Cawthorne crude, which has an API gravity of 36.4, is classified as a light, sweet grade, similar to Bonny Light crude, making it highly desirable in the global refining market.

The export operation was carried out through the Cawthorne Floating Storage and Offloading Facility located off Bonny, Rivers State, thereby improving crude oil evacuation and operational efficiency.

The NNPC explained that the development is in line with its broader strategy to increase production, maximize asset value and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global oil market.

The introduction of Cawthorne Blend also supports national goals to increase crude oil production to three million barrels per day and gas production to 12 billion cubic feet per day by 2030.

NNPC Group Chief Executive Officer, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, has lauded the political direction of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to sustainable growth, innovation and global competitiveness.
