Latest News: Another senior army officer has been killed in Borno

A serving Colonel of the Nigerian Army has reportedly been killed in an ambush by suspected insurgents in Monguno, Borno State, during a reinforcement mission following a night attack on a military position.

This comes days after a Brigadier General, Oseni Braimah and several soldiers were killed when Boko Haram and Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists launched a coordinated assault on a military base in Benisheikh.

The latest incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, April 13, 2026, when the officer identified as IA Muhammad was ambushed while responding to a distress call at a Forward Operating Base (FOB) attached to the 242 Battalion.

According to sources, the insurgents launched a coordinated assault on Sunday night, targeting FOB Monguno, a key military center in the northeast counterinsurgency theater.

Sources explained that the officer quickly mobilized to support the besieged troops, but was ambushed en route.

The device, described as remotely detonated, reportedly exploded as the vehicle approached, instantly killing the officer and striking other members of the convoy.

Military authorities had not yet commented on the latest incident at the time of writing this report.
