Arsenal are back in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals, but not in the way many expected.

A drab 0-0 draw against Sporting CP at the Emirates Stadium was enough to seal qualification, thanks to their 1-0 lead in the first leg.

Although the result is a historical milestone, a second consecutive semi-final appearance for the first time in club history, The performance has sparked serious debate.

Coming from Mikel Arteta’s war cry of “without fear, pure fire”What unfolded was anything but explosive.

Arsenal managed just a shot at the targetraising fresh concerns about their offensive upside at a crucial stage of the season.

Flickers instead of flames

The Gunners’ performance lacked the spark, intensity and attacking conviction, which has been a worrying trend following their recent defeat to AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League.

Sporting was about to punish them twice:

  • Geny Catamo hit the post before the break
  • Substitute João Simões shot narrowly wide at the last moment

However, Arsenal’s defense stood firm. Arteta acknowledged the physical toll on his team after going through a brutal schedule:

“There is a reason why we are the only English team in the competition, because this league and this schedule exhausts you and it is very difficult to do what we have done.” Arteta said.

“When I see them back off when we lose the ball, the habits they have, it’s just amazing.”

“That’s why I know what these players are doing.”

The warrior spirit and the rise of Rice’s leadership

One of the biggest stories of the night came from Declan Rice, who defied concerns about his fitness to deliver a commanding performance.

Arteta revealed how unlikely his participation was:

“Declan was devastated yesterday, he didn’t have the opportunity to play today, he didn’t feel well at all today. [but] “He played 94 minutes at the level he is at.” Arteta said.

“Piero [Hincapie] The same thing, each player is putting everything on the line to contribute, to give their best, and I value that a lot about the team.”

“They made the decision [to make Rice captain] because Declan has earned the status, the role, the way he has taken responsibility in difficult times.”

“He’s a great leader, he’s a great player for us and I love that the players take ownership of that.”

Rice backed it up statistically, too, leading the team in

touches (76),

completed passes (60), and

passing accuracy (96.8%).
