Alake visits Zents 90.9 FM, urges media to promote unity and avoid promoting bad leadership

The Alake and the Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Michael Adedotun Gbadebo, have called on radio stations, newspapers and other media to use their platforms responsibly, promoting unity, peace and good governance rather than amplifying divisive voices or enabling corrupt leadership.

Oba Adedotun made the remarks during a visit to Zents FM 90.9 FM in Obantoko, Abeokuta, Ogun State, where he commended the management and staff of the station for their commitment to community broadcasting.

The station commissioned in 2024 by the monarch is said to have had a positive impact in its last two years of operation.

The Alake in his speech said: “Radio stations like newspapers are expected to promote unity, promote people’s belonging to each other without alienating them from the community.

“You have a great responsibility to promote peace and good governance, not bad government that comes along and takes away all the people’s resources.”

He further noted that promoting unity among the four Egba clans was one of his first priorities after ascending to the throne, stressing that a strong community is built on cohesion.

“When we are united, we are strong. When we are divided, we are very weak,” he said.

The royal father also commended the radio station for its role in keeping the Egba community informed, recalling that Abeokuta holds historical recognition as the birthplace of the first newspaper in Nigeria.

“It’s very important that people within the community themselves know what’s going on,” he said.

During the visit, Oba Gbadebo was informed of the recent storm damage which caused the station’s mast to collapse, which initially brought the monarch to the radio station.

Reacting to the incident, Alake gratefully said the fall did not affect nearby properties as he expressed relief that no staff or neighbors were injured, encouraging management to rebuild stronger infrastructure.

The Director General, Mr. Kola Adeleye and the Station Consultant, Chief Festus Kehinde, in their speech, they assured that repairs were already underway and that the station expected to resume full transmission shortly.

Alake also promised to return for a formal interview session, describing it as “the essence of having a radio station”.

In a goodwill message delivered remotely by the station’s Chief Executive Officer, Kunle Sowunmi, he assured that Zents 90.9 FM will continue to serve the economic and social development of Egbaland, stressing that the station has already removed more than 20 people from the unemployment market.

The visit was attended by the station consultant, general manager and other senior management, station board members and staff, as well as traditional owners and community stakeholders.
