FG: Removal of fuel subsidies, currency reforms will produce long-term gains

The Federal Government on Friday assured Nigerians that ongoing economic reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies, foreign exchange adjustments and fiscal restructuring, are designed to provide long-term national benefits despite current economic pressures.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, gave the assurance in Lagos while receiving the “Image Maker Award 2026”, urging Nigerians to remain patient as government policies begin to take full effect.

Idris said President Bola Tinubu’s administration remains committed to transparent communication and consistent engagement with citizens on policy direction, stressing that effective information management is critical to sustaining public trust during times of reform.

According to him, government communication must go beyond information sharing to build trust, unity and hope among Nigerians.

“As we face major policy changes – including the elimination of fuel subsidies, foreign exchange reforms and fiscal restructuring – our approach has been anchored on clarity, consistency and credibility,” he said.

He argued that while the reforms may pose short-term hardship, they are necessary steps to reposition the economy for sustainable growth and improved fiscal stability.

The minister also underlined the importance of timely and accurate information in safeguarding national security, adding that the ministry is working closely with security agencies and the media to ensure public calm and prevent disinformation.

He also highlighted the role of the media in strengthening democracy, urging journalists to continue supporting efforts to bridge the gap between government policies and public understanding.

Idris reaffirmed his commitment to responsible public communication, anchored in truth, transparency and accountability, describing the award as a call to do more in the service of Nigerians.

The event, organized by Vanguard Media Limited, was attended by key political and religious figures, including governors, ministers and senior clergy, who praised efforts to improve government communication and national cohesion.
