At the time, his decision surprised many fans and observers, given his leadership role and importance to the team.

“It was about my family,” he said.

According to the defender, the demands of international football had limited the time he could spend with his loved ones, especially during the FIFA windows.

“I wanted more time at home,” he implied.

Ekong explained that stepping away allowed him to prioritize his personal life while continuing his career at the club.

“It was a great decision,” he said.

He also revealed that his move to Al-Ahli was partly influenced by a desire to extend his playing career and ensure long-term stability.

“It gave me security,” he added.

The defender admitted that being considered surplus to requirements by his previous club, Al-Khlood, also influenced his career decisions.

“I had to think about the future,” he stressed.

Despite stepping away from the national team, Ekong expressed his pride in his time representing Nigeria and the memories created.

“It was an honor,” he said.

His revelation sheds light on the personal challenges professional athletes face when balancing their career and family life.

For Ekong, the message is clear.

Football is important.

But family comes first.

Because behind every player there is a person and, sometimes, personal decisions exceed professional expectations.
