May Day Tragedy 2026: 3 Kwara LG officials die in motor accident


Three workers from Ekiti Local Government Area of ​​Kwara State have reportedly lost their lives in a road accident while returning from the May Day rally held in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital on May 1, 2026.

Six others also reportedly suffered varying degrees of injuries and are said to be receiving treatment in hospital.

Blueprint.ng gathered that the incident reportedly occurred on Friday while the workers were returning to Ekiti after attending the 2026 Workers Day rally held at the George Agbasika Inni Stadium Complex, Ilorin.

The Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Primary Health Care Development Agency (KWSPHCDA), Prof. Nusirat Elelu, who confirmed the incident in a statement in Ilorin on Saturday, said the late LG workers “were actively involved in the ongoing polio immunization exercise in the local government.”

Elelu described the incident as “painful, shocking and a great loss, not only to the families of the deceased, but also to the entire health sector and Kwara State at large, especially at a critical time when efforts are being intensified to protect children through the ongoing polio immunization campaign.”

“We are deeply saddened by this heartbreaking incident. These were dedicated officials who contributed immensely to the success of the ongoing polio immunization exercise, serving their communities with dedication. Their sudden loss is a huge blow to all of us,” the executive secretary said in the statement.

The Executive Secretary said the deceased’s dedication and commitment to public service and community health will never be forgotten, stressing that they died in active service of humanity and the development of their communities.

Prof. Elelu prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased and asked God to grant their families, colleagues and the entire people of Ekiti LGA the strength to bear the irreparable loss.

He also wished the injured victims a speedy recovery and assured them of the Agency’s support and solidarity during this difficult period.

The Executive Secretary also urged all stakeholders to remain united and support the affected families, while continuing to uphold their commitment to strengthen healthcare delivery across the State.
