BENUE Governor of the State, Rev. p. Hyacinth Alia, has moved to quell the growing political tensions within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, confirming that he has personally invited the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and other key stakeholders to a reconciliation meeting aimed at unifying the party ahead of the 2027 general elections..
Alia disclosed this on Saturday when she received the expression of interest and nomination forms for the 2027 governorship race, purchased on her behalf by the Benue State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Motorcycle Hirers Association at Government House, Makurdi.
The governor said the peace meeting, which is expected to bring together APC leaders from various political divisions in the state, would be held on Sunday (today), stressing that the move was necessary to restore unity and rebuild trust among party members.
According to him, the reconciliation effort involves all critical stakeholders, including members of the National Assembly, the Benue State House of Assembly and leaders of different APC blocs in the state.
“I have written a letter to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, inviting him and all different groups, including Senators, Members of the House of Representatives and Members of the House of Assembly of Benue State, to an internal meeting of the APC,” Alia said.
He acknowledged that scheduling problems had delayed previous plans, but insisted that all parties had now agreed to a unified meeting.
“We all agree that tomorrow (Sunday) all APC members will come together, pray and become one. We called this meeting because what divides us is not stronger than what unites us. What binds us is always greater,” the governor added.
Checks indicate that the reconciliation meeting is expected to represent a major political reset for the Benue APC, which has been engulfed in internal disputes and factional disputes over leadership control and 2027 succession politics.
Sources within the party had previously hinted that the outcome of the meeting could shape zoning agreements, influence the composition of the state executive committee and result in the emergence of consensus candidates for key elective positions ahead of the polls.
It was previously reported that Alia, Akume’s camp and other stakeholders had planned what many described as a “make-or-break” reconciliation session to resolve lingering disputes that have divided the party for nearly three years.
Political observers say the outcome of the talks will be crucial in determining whether the APC can present a united front in Benue State ahead of the 2027 general elections or continue to battle internal fractures that have weakened cohesion within it.
