Why I Left the Music Industry – Carter Efe shares a frustrating experience

Popular comedian and singer Carter Efe has opened up on why he stepped away from music, describing the entertainment industry as “very evil” in a viral video that has sparked widespread reactions online.

The entertainer, who gained attention with his hit single “Machala,” said he initially believed making music was just about releasing songs and enjoying the fame that comes with it, then he discovered the complicated realities of the business side of the industry.

“I ran away from music because this industry is so evil. I thought once you released a song, you could go out and dance to it,” said Carter Efe while reflecting on his experience in the world of music.

He further stated that his perspective changed after learning about how revenue and royalties are shared in music distribution deals. According to him, he received a communication stating that he would earn less than expected from his songs.

“Next, Spotify sent me a full letter saying that I wouldn’t even get 10% of my songs,” he said in the video, although he didn’t provide specific details about the agreement or the parties involved in the arrangement.

His comments quickly sparked debate on social media, with many Nigerians questioning the accuracy of his claims and clarifying that Spotify typically pays copyright holders and distributors rather than directly determining a percentage of artists’ contracts. However, others sympathized with his frustration and pointed out the challenges many future artists face in navigating the music business.
