Ibadan kidnapping: Makinde confirms murder of teacher, arrest of six suspects

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has confirmed the killing of one of the teachers and the arrest of six suspected kidnappers at a tertiary institution in the state.

Makinde stated this in a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Suleimon Olanrewaju, in Ibadan, Monday.

He conveyed his condolences to the families of the victims and assured that the government would explore kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to rescue others in the kidnappers’ den.

The governor also sympathized with the family members of the security officers who lost their lives in the rescue operation.

According to him, the operators lost their lives when they encountered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) planted by the kidnappers.

He stated that the injured security personnel responded positively to treatment and the government would spare no expense in treating them.

Makinde, who appealed to the victims’ families, religious institutions and other interested parties to be patient, promised that the government would rescue the victims and reunite them with their families.

“So I’m sorry, there may not be a quick fix, but we will continue to do our best to resolve this issue quickly.

“What we know is that currently seven teachers have been kidnapped. And unfortunately this morning we received a video that one of the teachers, as far as I know, a mathematics teacher, was killed by terrorists,” he said.

Makinde, however, said the government had achieved some success in the operation by arresting several people in connection with the incident.

“Well, from the information obtained by the Police Commissioner, around six people were arrested in the area.

“Some of them, we believe, may have been informants or people running logistics for the terrorists.

“Also, three persons of interest have been arrested by other security forces in the state,” he added.

Gunmen kidnapped six school officials (five teachers and a principal) and an unnamed number of students in a coordinated attack on three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on 15 May.
