Lagos arrests 931 sites for environmental crimes and seals 239 sites in a year

The Lagos State Government has stepped up its crackdown on environmental violations, arresting no fewer than 931 people for waste-related offenses within a year of ongoing enforcement operations across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Sunday during the 2026 ministerial press conference held in Alausa, Ikeja, saying the state has significantly strengthened monitoring, enforcement and compliance activities to improve sanitation and environmental standards.

According to him, enforcement teams carried out wide-ranging operations which resulted in the inspection of 2,251 sites, the issuing of 1,711 contravention notices and the sealing of 239 premises found responsible for violating environmental regulations.

“Thanks to the agency’s enforcement action, 931 people have been arrested for waste-related offences, 2,251 sites inspected, 1,711 contravention notices issued and 239 sites sealed,” Wahab said.

He added that the State had also intensified environmental clean-up operations with the evacuation of over 650 tonnes of construction and demolition waste from different parts of Lagos, as part of efforts to reduce indiscriminate dumping and associated public health risks.

“The agency evacuated over 650 tonnes of construction waste and supported awareness on demolition and disaster waste through stakeholder engagement,” he said.

Wahab further revealed that the government has expanded its environmental monitoring capacity through the deployment of modern air quality infrastructure across the state.

He said the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency has completed 114 installations of air quality sensors and rehabilitated pollution abatement facilities to improve data-driven environmental management.

“The agency has successfully completed 114 air quality sensor installations and restored air pollution abatement facilities across the state,” he added.

He explained that the initiative aims to strengthen pollution monitoring, improve air quality management and safeguard public health in the densely populated state.

The commissioner also revealed that cleaner fish processing technology has been introduced in Ago Egun through improved ovens designed to reduce smoke emissions and improve working conditions for local processors.

“Additionally, cleaner fish processing technology introduced in Ago Egun has reduced smoke emissions, improved air quality and protected the health of local processors,” he said.

Reaffirming government’s commitment, the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, he said, remains committed to ensuring stronger environmental compliance, cleaner communities and technology-driven enforcement across Lagos State.
