Lagos Police has launched a special tactical squad to combat crime in Ikorodu

In response to growing security concerns in Ikorodu and surrounding communities, the Lagos State Police Command has introduced a new tactical intervention unit dubbed “Commando Sweeper Squad” to strengthen anti-crime operations in the area.

The initiative approved by the Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai, comes amidst increasing complaints by residents over criminal activities and insecurity in parts of Ikorodu axis.

Details of the operation were contained in a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Police Inspector Abimbola Adebisi, issued on Monday.

According to the statement, the newly formed outfit was designed as a temporary security intervention mechanism aimed at restoring public confidence and improving safety across affected communities.

The command revealed that the force consists of personnel drawn from several tactical formations in the police force, including the Rapid Reaction Force, Eco Strike Force, Police Mobile Unit, as well as personnel from similar security agencies and members of the Civilian Joint Task Force.

To ensure faster response time and operational reach, the unit has been deployed in Ijede, where officers are expected to coordinate security operations across Ikorodu and surrounding locations.

Police also confirmed that the force has been equipped with patrol vehicles and three Armored Personnel Carriers provided by the Lagos State Security Trust Fund to enhance operational effectiveness.

“The force has been deployed strategically to identify black spots and criminal hideouts to carry out intelligence-led operations, raids, stop and search duties, and confidence-building patrols aimed at eliminating criminal elements,” the statement said.

The command assured residents that the operation will be carried out in accordance with the legal framework and urged the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing useful and timely information that can help the ongoing efforts to eradicate crime in the area.
